Royal Highland Show Breaks All Records On Livestock Entries

Royal Highland Show Breaks All Records On Livestock Entries - 2007

Almost 5000 head of cattle, sheep, goats and horses have been entered for the 2007 Royal Highland Show -  shattering all previous records and ensuring that come June visitors will see one of the finest displays of livestock anywhere in the world.

The show -  major sponsor The Royal Bank of Scotland -  takes place at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, Edinburgh on June 21-24.

The exact headage figure is 4787 which compares to 4556 last year, but when entries for poultry, driving and heavy horse turnouts are taken into account, the overall figure could break through the 5000 mark.

Show-jumping entries are yet to close but it looks like last year’s numbers of over 500 will be exceeded.

The show’s management team now faces the task of fitting in as many entries as possible to the various stalls and pens at Ingliston.

Show Manager David Dunsmuir said: “The  response from stock exhibitors throughout the UK has been amazing.  It’s obvious they feel that Scotland’s national show is the place to be seen and our intention is to accommodate as many animals as possible, thereby ensuring the best display of stock ever at the Royal Highland.”

The sheep section dominates with more than 1600 entries. Four breeds -  Texel, Beltex, Suffolk and Shetland -  have over 100 entries with Texels at a staggering 206.  Scotland’s most numerous native breed, the Blackface, has 93 entered.

Beef cattle are led by the Limousin breed with 121 followed by Charolais at 117 and Aberdeen Angus at 114. The dairy cattle section, including new classes for calves, has a total of 143.

The ever popular light horse sections have attracted 1450 entries with strong numbers in Hunters under saddle (160), Coloureds (136) and Working Hunter Ponies (133). The Welsh A, B C and D groups have a total of 193 entered.

In heavy horses there are 171 Highland ponies, 111 Clydesdales and 78 Shetland ponies.
