ROYAL HIGHLAND WINTER FAIR DEAL SIGNED

Key members of both the Scottish National Fat Stock Club and the Royal Highland Agricultural Society met up this week to sign the partnership documents for the new company which will run the Royal Highland Winter Fair on November 26th 2008.

The new Board of John Dykes, James Cullens and David Dunsmuir from RHASS and Jim Meikle and Gavin Scott from SNFSC will be led by Chairman Bruce Lang who said, “It has been an honour to have been involved with all those who have worked hard in a positive manner to ensure the continued success of Scotland’s leading prime stock show.”

The partners have been allocated different responsibilities for the show according to their areas of expertise, and while the Scottish livestock industry continues to go through a period of change, it is essential for farmers to know that the successful and traditional shop window for prime cattle and sheep will thrive under new management.

Speaking on behalf of the SNFSC, Bruce said, “This partnership is good for the Club, it secures the future of the show and we look forward to working with the RHASS and main sponsor, Osmonds, to develop the major winter event that Scotland deserves.”

John Dykes, Chairman Designate of the RHASS, also appreciated the positive attitude of all the Board members and he said, “This is a step forward for the whole agricultural industry. The Royal Highland Winter Fair is very much a food orientated event and food is very much on the agenda at the moment. We hope to develop an event which brings the consumer closer to the farmer, appeals to the public and creates an appreciation of home-produced, quality beef and lamb.”

This year’s event will remain in its one day format but plans for the future include a two day show possibly over a weekend to encourage the public to attend and tap into the potentially huge consumer market of Edinburgh on the doorstep. The recent involvement of school children at the Fair and the butchery and cookery demonstrations have been extremely successful and the new Board is keen to develop this part of the show, while not forgetting the supreme display of top class livestock which in itself is a crowd puller.
