The Society's Future

The Society's Future
With its history of pioneering spirit and entrepreneurship, Scottish agriculture has coped resolutely with crisis and challenge.  As in many previous decades, the latter half of the 20th century witnessed the eager adoption of new mechanisation, new breeds, new crops, new methods...a new outlook.  The 21st century will undoubtedly accelerate the rapid change experienced in the world of agriculture, forestry and other established and emerging land-based industries, which are being challenged by global economics, scientific development and the needs of consumers.

The Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland will be at the forefront of that change facing the challenges that lie ahead, being involved with legislative proposals, developing business, informing young and old alike...fostering a greater understanding of the rural dimension in the life and times of Scotland.

The Society is currently in the midst of a twenty year plan to transform its base, the Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston, into Scotland's National Showground - an internationally recognised exhibition and event venue with excellent facilities.

The Royal Highland Centre already attracts 1.2 million visitors a year, and it is estimated that it contributes some £250 million to the local and national economy.  The Royal Highland Centre is a major asset for Edinburgh, the Lothians and indeed for the whole of Scotland.
