RHASS and the Dick Vet

History records that the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland's association with the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies began in 1823, the then Highland and Agricultural Society awarding a grant of £50 to allow William Dick to establish the first veterinary school in Scotland at Edinburgh.

The Society ceased to superintend the school's activities in 1866 but it continue - as it does today - to patronise the award of medals for academic achievement.  Each year at the graduation ceremony, these medals are presented by a representative of the Society.  A further link with the Dick Vet has been forged through the Society's major event, the Royal Highland Show, where the veterinary needs of around 5000 head of livestock are in the hands of a team of vets from the School.

As part of its charitable aims and educational remit, the RHASS has awarded £30,000 towards the upgrade of its veterinary facilities.
