About Long Service AwardsAwards are given to farm workers for approved service in full time employment with either one employer on the same or different holdings, or on one holding with different employers. For an award to be considered, the employer must be a current Member of Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland and have an Agricultural Holding Number.
Prior to 1913, awards had occasionally been made for long service on farms, with each case judged on its merits. In 1913, the Society decided to formalise a Long Service Awards Scheme, and to award a Silver Medal and Illuminated Certificate for approved service of not less than 30 years on one holding or with the same employer. Approximately 9,000 Silver Medals have been issued since 1913.
In 1927 special awards were introduced for approved service of 45 years and more, with Special Certificates and Silver Gilt Medals being awarded. Approximately 1,300 have been awarded to date.
Up until 2002, awards were given for approved service in three categories: for 30 to 44 years, 45 to 59 years and 60 years and above. From 1 January 2003, the three categories have become: for 30 to 39 years, 40 to 49 years and 50 years and above.
Now in its 223rd year, The Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland is extremely proud to be able to recognise the hard work, effort and loyalty which an employee has given to agriculture over the years.
